I’ve been asked so many times how to get out of retail without a degree and still succeed in life – and if it’s even possible for most.
There’s a long answer and a short answer to this dilemma – I’ll give you the long answer first.
The biggest problem with working in a retail job and not having the leverage of a higher education, training or skills is simply that it may be presenting you with a “Catch 22” scenario.
You can quit your retail or service job to pursue other things in life (like the education, training or skills)…but that would make the paychecks stop.
Or you can continue working and getting paychecks, barely getting by, and never have the time or the resources to get the education.
The Rare Few
I know a few people that were trapped in retail and worked extremely hard to get an education while they were working at the job. That education is the only thing that helped them move on to other industries.
But that’s not necessarily an option for everyone. And it may not be for you either.
For those few people I know that were successful at being able to go back to school WHILE they worked their existing retail job, they had managers/supervisors that worked with them.
This was in every area: Scheduling, hours, positions worked, job duties, etc.
Here’s where I like to call them “lucky”!
Why? They didn’t have managers that were tyrants…like the majority of retail/service employees.
See, many people that are trapped in retail, service or waiter/waitress jobs have managers that are unwilling, unable (or both) to work with them to allow them to better themselves on the side.
Those managers aren’t even approachable, much less willing to work with you to make something better of yourself on the side.
I know. It sucks. It’s a sad stat.
I not only experienced it myself, I’ve seen this exact scenario multiple times.
If you’re in a situation like that, you know it’s only going to get worse, right?
There’s good news on the horizon, though!…
How to Get Out of Retail Without a Degree
YOU have the advantage over what I started out with…
Simply because of the advancement of the internet and how easy it is to start an online side-business today and become extremely successful with it.
When I was working in retail, the internet was really just getting its “legs.” The world was in wonder at the empowerment of the information and opportunities being created.
“I had to work by trial and error (and I made more errors than successful achievements when I first started, believe me).”
I remember working sometimes 12 and 14 hour days. No regular schedule. No weekends or regular days off. No time – and when I did have time, I was exhausted.
In my personal exhaustion and feeling trapped, I remember searching earnestly for some way to get out and have more control of my life!
Maybe you’re feeling that way, too.
And you have to stay sharp and realize that your situation is probably only going to get worse…unless you do something about it…
Unless you can convince your manager/supervisor to work with you at every level to allow you to search for a better job, go back to school, learn a trade, or learn a skill that will pay you more…you’ve basically got 1 of 2 things you can do:
- Move back in with your parents – This is probably not even a remote possibility for most people AND it’s somewhat crazy to think this way.
- Start a side-business online – This is what I did. YOU can too! This can eventually (and in short time) replace your current income and give you the freedom to do what you want to do.
So you want to know how to get out of retail without a degree?
It couldn’t be more simple than it is RIGHT NOW!
In fact, it doesn’t really matter what type of job you have. You can do this.
Get yourself a side-business online with a good blog, good traffic and in an area that you have an expertise in, you’re learning more about and you’re passionate about and the SKY’S THE LIMIT! Keep in mind that it can be done with just 10-20 minutes of work a day.
That’s how to get out of retail without a degree… and prosper!
